Overview
Silfra is one of the world’s most extraordinary natural wonders and among the few places on Earth where visitors can swim or dive between two continents. Located inside Þingvellir National Park, Silfra is a crystal-clear fissure formed between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
The history of Silfra is closely connected to Iceland’s unique geological formation. Iceland itself sits directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian continental plates slowly move apart by approximately 2 centimeters each year. The Silfra fissure was created after major earthquakes caused shifts in the Earth’s crust. Over centuries, glacial meltwater filtered through underground lava rock for decades before reaching the fissure, creating exceptionally pure water with visibility exceeding 100 meters in some conditions.
Silfra lies within Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and historically one of Iceland’s most important locations. It was here that Iceland established one of the world’s earliest parliamentary assemblies around 930 AD, making the area culturally significant as well as geologically remarkable.
Today, Silfra has become famous among divers, snorkelers, photographers, and adventure travelers. The water remains extremely cold year-round, usually around 2–4°C, but specialized dry suits allow visitors to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience safely.
Visitors can float through sections known as the Big Crack, Silfra Hall, Silfra Cathedral, and Silfra Lagoon, each offering spectacular underwater scenery.
