Lake Retba ( Senegal, Dakar)

Overview

Lake Retba, commonly known as Lac Rose (Pink Lake), is one of Africa’s most unique natural attractions. Located approximately 30–35 km northeast of Dakar, the lake became internationally famous because of its remarkable pink-colored water, which under ideal conditions can range from light pink to deep reddish shades. Surrounded by sand dunes and coastal landscapes, Lake Retba offers visitors an extraordinary natural experience.

The history of Lake Retba is closely linked to local communities and Senegal’s salt industry. For decades, the lake has been an important economic resource for local residents who extract large quantities of salt from its mineral-rich waters. Workers traditionally enter the lake with protective shea butter applied to their skin to prevent irritation caused by the high salt concentration. The lake gained worldwide attention when it served as the finishing point of the historic Paris–Dakar Rally for many years.

Scientifically, the lake’s famous pink color is caused by salt-loving microorganisms and algae, particularly Dunaliella salina, which produce red pigments in high-salinity environments. The lake’s salt concentration is extremely high and is comparable in some areas to that of the Dead Sea, allowing visitors to float easily on the surface.

Apart from its colorful appearance, the destination offers cultural experiences, salt-harvesting demonstrations, photography opportunities, and scenic landscapes.
