Ruby Falls ( Chattanooga, Tennessee)
Overview
Ruby Falls is one of the most remarkable underground attractions in the United States. Hidden deep inside Lookout Mountain, Ruby Falls is famous for being one of the world’s tallest and deepest underground waterfalls open to the public. Surrounded by fascinating cave formations and colorful illuminated displays, the destination offers visitors an unforgettable experience beneath the Earth’s surface.
The history of Ruby Falls began in 1928 when explorer Leo Lambert was searching for a way to reopen access to cave systems in Lookout Mountain. During his exploration, he crawled through a narrow underground passage and discovered a previously hidden waterfall nearly 1,120 feet below the mountain surface. Leo named the waterfall after his wife, Ruby, creating the famous attraction known today.
Geologically, the caves of Lookout Mountain formed over millions of years through the gradual dissolution of limestone by underground water systems. Over time, nature created beautiful rock formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and flowstones throughout the cave network. The underground waterfall itself drops approximately 145 feet (44 meters) into a pool below.
Today, Ruby Falls attracts families, photographers, adventure travelers, and nature lovers from around the world. Guided cave tours lead visitors through narrow passages and impressive underground formations before reaching the spectacular waterfall chamber.
The surrounding Chattanooga region also offers scenic mountain views, hiking trails, and outdoor activities.
