Lencois Maranhenses National Park ( Brazil)
Overview
Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is one of the most unusual and breathtaking landscapes on Earth. Located in northeastern Brazil, this extraordinary national park is famous for its endless white sand dunes and crystal-clear rainwater lagoons that appear between the dunes, creating a surreal desert-like paradise. Although it resembles a desert, Lençóis Maranhenses receives significant seasonal rainfall, making it very different from traditional deserts.
The name Lençóis Maranhenses translates to “Bedsheets of Maranhão” because the rolling white dunes resemble giant white sheets spread across the landscape. Covering approximately 1,550 square kilometers (600 square miles), the park is among Brazil’s most visually spectacular natural attractions.
The history and formation of Lençóis Maranhenses are connected to thousands of years of geological processes. Sand carried by rivers such as the Parnaíba and Preguiças Rivers eventually reached the Atlantic coast through winds and ocean currents. Over time, the sand accumulated and formed massive dunes. During the rainy season, water collects in valleys between the dunes, creating beautiful temporary lagoons filled with fresh rainwater.
The area was officially protected as a national park in 1981 to preserve its unique ecosystem. Despite the harsh appearance of the landscape, the park supports wildlife including fish, migratory birds, turtles, and local plant species.
Visitors can enjoy dune exploration, swimming in natural lagoons, photography, and adventure tours through one of the world’s most extraordinary environments.
