Overview
Stone Forest, commonly known as Shilin, is one of China’s most extraordinary geological wonders. Famous for its towering limestone formations that resemble a forest made of stone, the area creates a surreal landscape of sharp rock pillars, narrow pathways, caves, lakes, and natural sculptures. Located about 90 km from Kunming, Stone Forest is among the most visited natural attractions in China and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The history of Stone Forest dates back approximately 270 million years, when the area was submerged beneath an ancient sea. Over millions of years, tectonic activity gradually lifted the seabed above the surface. Continuous wind, rain, and water erosion slowly dissolved the limestone, creating the spectacular stone pillars and formations visible today. The result is one of the world’s best examples of karst topography.
The region also has deep cultural significance for the local Yi People. Local legends tell the story of a beautiful Yi girl named Ashima, who became a symbol of love and freedom. According to the legend, Ashima was transformed into stone after facing tragedy, and many locals believe certain rock formations resemble her figure. Today, the Ashima story remains an important part of local culture and festivals.
