Overview
Champagne Pool is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular geothermal attractions and among the most photographed natural wonders in the country. The constant release of carbon dioxide gas creates thousands of bubbles on the water’s surface, giving the pool its famous “champagne” effect.
The geological history of Champagne Pool began around 700 years ago after a hydrothermal eruption created a crater in the region. The colorful appearance of the pool comes from various minerals deposited around its edges. The orange and yellow colors are mainly formed by arsenic and sulfur compounds, while the deep green and blue waters reflect unique chemical compositions and light interactions.
