Overview

Rakotzbrücke, often called the “Devil’s Bridge,” is one of Europe’s most enchanting and photogenic landmarks. Although sometimes referred to generally as a European attraction, the bridge is actually located in the village of Kromlau within the beautiful Kromlau Rhododendron Park. The bridge is famous for its unique curved design which, together with its reflection in the water, forms a perfect circular shape, creating a fairytale-like appearance.

The bridge was constructed around the 19th century and completed in approximately 1860 by local knight Friedrich Hermann Rötschke. It was built using carefully arranged basalt stone columns imported from distant regions. During that period, builders often created structures with dramatic architecture inspired by myths and legends.

The name “Devil’s Bridge” comes from old European folklore. Similar bridges across Europe were often associated with legends claiming that the structures were so difficult to build that people believed supernatural forces or the devil himself helped construct them. Although these stories are fictional, they added mystery and charm to such bridges.

Today, Rakotzbrücke has become one of Germany’s most photographed attractions. Visitors come throughout the year to witness its changing scenery—from blooming flowers in spring and vibrant autumn colors to snow-covered winter landscapes.
