Fly Geyser, (USA)

Overview

Fly Geyser is one of the most surreal and colorful geothermal formations in the world. Located in Nevada’s remote Black Rock Desert, Fly Geyser appears almost extraterrestrial, with bright red, green, orange, and yellow mineral deposits covering its unusual cone-shaped structures. Constant streams of hot water emerge from the geyser, creating terraces, pools, and steam that make the landscape look like something from another planet.

Unlike many natural geothermal wonders, Fly Geyser was created partly through human activity. Its history began in 1916, when a well was drilled in the area while searching for water for agricultural purposes. The project was later abandoned. In 1964, another drilling operation accidentally reached geothermal water reservoirs beneath the surface. Hot mineral-rich water began rising through the ground and eventually continued flowing naturally.

Over decades, dissolved minerals such as calcium carbonate accumulated around the water source and gradually formed the spectacular towers visible today. Thermophilic algae living in the warm water contributed to the vivid colors, producing green and red shades across the formations. The geyser slowly continues changing shape even today as minerals continue building new layers.

Fly Geyser lies on land managed by:

Burning Man Project

through the surrounding Fly Ranch property. Public access has historically been limited and generally available through organized or guided visits.

The surrounding Black Rock Desert is also famous for dramatic landscapes and hosting the annual:

Burning Man

festival.
