Overview
Mount Roraima is one of the world’s most extraordinary natural wonders and among South America’s most mysterious mountains. Rising dramatically above the surrounding rainforest and savanna landscapes, Mount Roraima is famous for its flat tabletop summit, towering vertical cliffs, unusual rock formations, and unique ecosystems. It forms part of the ancient mountain systems known as tepuis, often described as “islands in the sky.”
Mount Roraima stands at approximately 2,810 meters (9,219 feet) above sea level and sits at the meeting point of three countries — Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana. The mountain is considered one of the oldest geological formations on Earth, with rock layers estimated to be around 1.7–2 billion years old.
The history of Mount Roraima is deeply rooted in indigenous culture. Local Pemon People regard the mountain as sacred. According to their legends, Roraima represents the stump of a gigantic tree that once held all the fruits and vegetables of the world. Mythological stories describe the mountain as a spiritual place connected to creation and nature.
Mount Roraima also attracted global attention through explorers and literature. British explorer Sir Everard im Thurn reached the summit in 1884. The mountain later inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to write The Lost World, a story about a mysterious plateau filled with prehistoric life and isolated ecosystems.
The summit landscape appears almost alien, with unusual black rock formations, crystal-clear pools, rare plants, waterfalls, and species found nowhere else on Earth because of millions of years of isolation.
